Bellafill contains polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres suspended in a collagen gel. Immediately after treatment, the collagen component provides correction in the treated area.
Over time, the collagen gel is absorbed while the PMMA microspheres remain. Your body forms collagen around those microspheres, creating an underlying framework that helps maintain the correction.
Unlike temporary fillers that are gradually absorbed by the body, Bellafill combines immediate correction with long-term structural support. Its FDA-approved indications focus on two very different concerns, one related to facial aging and the other to acne scarring.

Temporary filler gives us flexibility. Bellafill is different. Nasolabial folds are influenced by more than the crease you see beside your mouth. Changes in the cheeks, facial volume, skin and underlying support can all affect their appearance.
That is why our aesthetic providers look beyond the fold itself. The question is not simply, “Can we put filler here?” It is whether treating that area will improve the overall balance of your face. Facial aging is about more than the wrinkles we see on the surface. Over time, the skin produces less collagen and elastin, becomes thinner and less resilient, and gradually loses some of the structural support associated with smoother, firmer-looking skin.
Repeated facial movement also plays a role. Lines that initially appear only with expression can become visible at rest as the skin changes and its ability to rebound decreases.
Collagen provides an important structural framework within the skin. As collagen production declines with age, changes in skin quality, firmness and facial volume become more noticeable.
This is where collagen-stimulating treatments differ from simply filling a line. They are designed to encourage new collagen formation, helping reinforce the skin’s underlying support over time.
Fine lines may begin to appear with expression, particularly around the eyes and mouth, while the skin still retains much of its natural firmness and elasticity.

Acne scars are different. Depressed scars can create shadows and irregularities because portions of the skin sit below the surrounding surface.
Bellafill is FDA approved for certain moderate to severe atrophic, distensible acne scars on the cheek. By adding support beneath an appropriate scar, treatment can help bring the depression closer to the level of the surrounding skin.
Not every acne scar behaves the same way, so evaluation matters here too.

Bellafill is injected in the office after the required skin testing has been completed. Placement and the amount used are determined by the treatment area and the correction being made.
You may have temporary redness, swelling, tenderness or bruising around injection sites. Our aesthetic provider will give you aftercare instructions based on your treatment.
There is one important step patients don’t encounter with most modern hyaluronic acid fillers. Bellafill contains bovine collagen. A skin test is therefore required before treatment to screen for an allergic response to the collagen component.
This happens before your Bellafill treatment appointment and is part of determining whether you are an appropriate candidate.
This is one of the reasons people seek it out. Clinical studies of Bellafill for nasolabial folds have demonstrated correction lasting up to five years. Its FDA-approved acne scar indication has different supporting clinical data, so we would not present every Bellafill treatment as having the same expected duration.
But longevity shouldn’t be the only reason to choose it. A filler lasting longer is an advantage only when it is the right filler in the right location.
