Dr. Balikian’s philosophy with all face lift surgeries is for patients to look like themselves, only better, without the signs of aging. Patients’ faces look naturally lifted and do not looked pulled. This procedure can often be performed under local anesthesia with IV sedation, negating the need for general anesthesia.
Why Are Face Lifts Needed?
As we get older, changes occur on our face. The natural aging process causes a decline in skin elasticity. As we are exposed to the sun and pollutants, deeper lines and wrinkles start to form, especially between the nose and mouth (the nasolabial folds). The effects of gravity cause underlying facial muscles in the cheeks and neck to become loose.
Skin folds appear on the cheeks, and fatty tissue can appear around the neck and jowls, causing the jawline to lose its definition. Weakened platysma muscles of the neck separate and form a “turkey wattle.”
Patients who choose a facelift usually have two motivating factors: either they want to halt the advance of the aging process or they seek to reverse the already-present signs of aging.
A facelift will “set the clock back” to enable you to look like you did several years ago. It rejuvenates the face by reducing sagging skin, lifting and tightening weakened muscles of the face and neck, and removing excess fat underneath the skin, which smooths out and reduces wrinkles.
The facelift is typically divided into three components, and most patients require all of these components to be performed during a standard procedure:
- Liposuction: Reshapes the neck by removing loose excess fat deposits in the jowls and neck
- Cheek-jowl lift: Lifts sagging cheek and jawline tissues, softens the marionette lines
- Neck lift: Tightens the major weak neck muscles, removes bands running down the neck, creates a sharper chin-neck angle, and takes away excess skin
Not all facelifts are created equal. By using deep-plane techniques and SMAS muscle elevation, Dr. Balikian is able to reposition the underlying facial tissues rather than just the skin. By setting the architecture of the facial tissues back to where they once were, Dr. Balikian can prevent unnatural tightening or pulling of the skin, avoiding the “pulled” or “wind tunnel” appearance.
By using time-tested techniques, Dr. Balikian can give each individual patient the long-lasting high-quality results they desire, with imperceptible incision lines. Dr. Balikian uses computerized imaging during the consultation to help create natural-looking results.
What Is Rhytidectomy Recovery Like?
Face lift recovery varies depending on the exact technique used during surgery. It will involve aftercare for post-surgical swelling and bruising in the surgical area. Using ice packs as recommended will help to bring down the swelling.
Make sure to care for your incisions properly during healing so that they do not become infected. Pain and discomfort can be eased with painkillers as prescribed.
Remember to keep your head elevated at all times. Staying home from work for a time will be required. Do not participate in physically taxing activities like heavy exercise until cleared to do so.
