What is BBL HEROic™ and how is it different from traditional IPL?
BBL HEROic is an advanced form of intense pulsed light (IPL) that uses high-energy light to treat skin concerns like sun damage, redness, acne, and signs of aging. It offers faster, more uniform results with virtually no downtime, and it’s the only light-based treatment clinically shown to change gene expression related to aging.
What can BBL HEROic treat?
It effectively targets sun spots, age spots, redness, rosacea, acne, broken capillaries, uneven skin tone and texture, and fine lines. It also stimulates collagen production to improve skin elasticity over time.
Is BBL HEROic safe for all skin types?
BBL HEROic is safe for many skin types, but your provider will assess your skin tone, concerns, and goals during a consultation to ensure it’s the best treatment option for you.
How many sessions will I need?
While some patients see noticeable improvement after one treatment, most benefit from a series of 3–5 sessions spaced a few weeks apart for optimal, long-lasting results.
Does the treatment hurt?
Patients typically describe it as a quick, warm snapping sensation that is very tolerable. A cooling gel is applied beforehand to keep the skin comfortable.
Is there any downtime after treatment?
No. BBL HEROic has zero downtime, so you can return to work or normal activities right after your session. Some mild redness or darkening of pigment spots is normal and resolves quickly.
How soon will I see results?
Improvements can be seen within a few days, with continued improvement in skin clarity, tone, and texture over the next several weeks as collagen remodeling occurs.
Can BBL HEROic be used on areas other than the face?
Yes. BBL HEROic can treat large areas like the chest, arms, hands, shoulders, and back just as effectively as it treats the face.
Can BBL HEROic treat unwanted pigmentation, freckles, brown spots, and melasma?
Yes. Clinical and technical reports indicate BBL (and in particular BBL HERO + related combo protocols) are effective in reducing UV-induced hyperpigmentation, freckles, age/sun spots, and pigmented lesions. A recent study combining BBL HEROic (HERO ic) with MOXI found significant reduction in UV-induced hyperpigmentation after just one treatment.
Melasma is more challenging (since it has both epidermal and dermal components and can be recurrent), but BBL’s ability to target browns and improve skin evenness suggests it can help, often as part of a comprehensive plan. (Less strong data than for freckles/age spots, but promising.)
What about redness, rosacea, and visible/facial vessels (broken capillaries)?
BBL has robust evidence for treating vascular lesions, telangiectasias, and erythema (redness). BBL works by delivering light absorbed by hemoglobin, generating heat that collapses or damages small blood vessels, which are then cleared by the body, reducing visible redness. The accelerated HERO technology improves comfort, speed, and sometimes precision.
Can it help with sun damage, age spots, and uneven skin tone / texture / dullness?
Yes. Studies show BBL (including HEROic or high energy BBL) reduces hyperpigmentation, improves uneven skin tone, decreases fine wrinkles and texture irregularities. The “rejuvenation of gene expression” study (Stanford) showed that BBL treatments can restore gene expression in photoaged skin to more youthful patterns, along with reductions in fine wrinkling, abnormal pigmentation, and visible erythema.
Can it reduce signs of aging like fine lines, skin laxity, and improve overall firmness?
Yes. BBL (and specifically newer HEROic versions) stimulate dermal collagen and elastin — light/thermal energy triggers the skin’s repair mechanisms. This can lead to reduction of fine lines, improved skin elasticity, and a more youthful appearance. The gene-expression study showed restoration of youthful patterns in aged skin.
Is it useful for treating broken capillaries, facial vessels, or spider veins?
Yes. BBL technology has been shown to reduce visible small vessels and broken capillaries, especially on the face. HEROic enhances this capability through stronger, more consistent pulses and better control.
